Quick summary

A dental implant is a titanium screw surgically placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. The cost of a single implant with a crown ranges from 25,000 to 45,000 NOK in Norway. The entire process from surgery to finished tooth typically takes 3 to 6 months because the implant needs time to fuse with the jawbone. Implants are the most durable solution for replacing missing teeth and can last a lifetime with proper care.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant consists of three parts: a titanium screw that is anchored in the jawbone, an abutment that connects the screw to the crown, and the crown itself, which is the visible tooth. Titanium is a biocompatible material, meaning the body accepts it without rejection. Over time, the bone grows around the screw in a process called osseointegration, giving the implant a solid foundation.

Implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth via a bridge, or an entire set of teeth through solutions like All-on-4.

Who can get dental implants?

Most healthy adults are candidates for dental implants. Your dentist will assess several factors:

  • Jawbone density: There must be enough bone tissue to anchor the implant. If the bone is too thin, bone augmentation (grafting) may be necessary.
  • General health: Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune conditions and certain medications (such as bisphosphonates) can affect healing.
  • Smoking: Smokers have a significantly higher risk of complications and implant failure. Most dentists recommend quitting before treatment.
  • Age: Implants are typically not placed in patients under 18, as the jaw is still growing.

How the treatment works step by step

1. Examination and planning

The dentist takes X-rays or a CT scan of the jaw to assess bone quality and plan implant placement. You receive a personalised treatment plan with estimated timelines and costs.

2. Surgery

Under local anaesthesia, the dentist makes an opening in the gum and carefully drills a hole in the jawbone. The titanium screw is inserted and the gum is stitched closed over the implant. The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes per implant.

3. Healing period

The implant needs 2-4 months to integrate with the bone in the lower jaw, and up to 6 months in the upper jaw. During this period many patients wear a temporary solution for aesthetic purposes.

4. Abutment and impression

Once healing is complete, an abutment is attached to the implant and the dentist takes an impression to fabricate the permanent crown.

5. Permanent crown

The crown, custom-made to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth, is placed on top. The result looks and functions like a natural tooth.

How much do dental implants cost?

Prices vary between clinics and depend on the complexity of the treatment. Here are typical price ranges in Norway (updated March 2026):

TreatmentPrice range (NOK)
Single implant with crown25,000 - 45,000
Implant bridge (3-4 teeth)60,000 - 120,000
All-on-4 (full arch)120,000 - 250,000
Bone augmentation (add-on)8,000 - 25,000
CT scan1,500 - 3,000

Dental implants are not normally covered by HELFO (the Norwegian health reimbursement scheme), but some patients with medical conditions that cause tooth loss may be eligible for support. Ask your dentist whether you may qualify for reimbursement.

Many clinics offer payment plans to spread the cost over time.

Possible risks and complications

As with any surgical procedure there are risks, although the complication rate for dental implants is low (under 5%):

  • Infection around the implant (peri-implantitis)
  • Nerve damage that can cause numbness in the lip or chin
  • Implant failure where the screw does not integrate with the bone
  • Sinus problems with upper jaw implants
  • Mechanical failure such as loosening of the crown or abutment

Risk is significantly reduced by choosing an experienced implant surgeon and following aftercare instructions carefully.

Aftercare and maintenance

Proper aftercare is critical to the lifespan of your implant:

  • First few days: Avoid hard food, smoking and intense physical activity. Use painkillers as recommended.
  • First few weeks: Brush gently around the surgical site with a soft toothbrush. Rinse with chlorhexidine mouthwash if your dentist recommends it.
  • Long-term: Dental implants are maintained like natural teeth with daily brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups at least twice a year.
